In response to an investigation launched by NARAL Pro-Choice America, Google agreed to remove deceptive search engine advertising for “crisis pregnancy centers,” or CPCs. NARAL found 79 percent of the CPCs advertising on Google claimed to provide abortions, which couldn’t be further from the truth: CPCs notoriously operate to promote a dangerously manipulative anti-choice agenda.
“Google’s leadership in removing the majority of these ads is a victory for truth in advertising and for the women who have been targeted by a deliberate misinformation campaign by crisis pregnancy centers,” NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said in a statement.
In November 2013, Attorney General Greg Abbott directed $46,100 from the sale of “choose life” license plates to CPCs. Since 2005, Texas has funneled more than $30 million to CPCs.
These unregulated and unlicensed CPCs continue to masquerade as medical clinics all over Texas, even as real family planning, reproductive health and abortion providers across the state have been forced to close their doors as a result of House Bill 2 and lack of state funding. Undeterred by mounting evidence that CPCs target vulnerable women with medically inaccurate and dangerous information, Texas anti-choice lawmakers continue to divert state funds from legitimate reproductive health services into these unscrupulous clinics.
