According to a recent poll released by CNN, two thirds of Americans believe that the solution to the looming fiscal cliff should be a mix of spending cuts and tax increases.

With overwhelming support for a balanced approach, it is no surprise that Republicans are running from Grover Norquist in recent days.

Over the last several years Grover Norquist, an unelected lobbyist and head of the conservative Americans for Tax Reform, has held the GOP hostage by threatening to primary Republican lawmakers unless they adopt hard line tea party positions regarding the budget.

However, it finally appears that Norquist's hold on the GOP appears to be weakening:

“A careful analysis of our budget and trying to reconcile that with the Americans for Tax Reforms pledge led me to the clear decision that the pledge itself is an impediment to meaningful tax reform” - Congressman Scott Rigell (R-VA)

“If we do it his way then we’ll continue in debt…I care too much about my country. I care a lot more about it than I do about Grover Norquist.” - Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)

“I think Grover is wrong when it comes to capping deductions and buying down the debt… What I would say to Grover Norquist is that the sequester would destroy the United States military,” - Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC)

“I’m not obligated on the pledge…I made Tennesseans aware, I was just elected, the only thing I’m honoring is the oath I take when I serve.” - Bob Corker

“A lot has been said about this pledge and I will tell you when I go to the constituents that re-elected me, it is not about that pledge, it really is about trying to solve problems.” - House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA)

With Congress set to make historic budget decisions before the looming fiscal cliff on December 31st and Norquist's weakening control over Republican lawmakers, now is the time to mobilize and demand Congress end the Bush-era tax cuts for the rich.
