Happy Black History Month, Texans!
February is the month that we set aside to celebrate the history, experience, and culture of Black Americans, history that is often left out of school curriculums and history lessons. While the pandemic has made it harder to come together in person, we can still find community by celebrating Black Texans in events held across the state. Progress Texas has compiled a list of events in Texas celebrating Black History Month, including virtual discussion sessions, museum exhibits, performances, cooking classes, and more.
As always, you can celebrate Black history by advocating for racial justice and equality year round. This year, the Texas legislature is considering legislation to tackle systemic racism in healthcare, criminal justice, education, and more. You can follow along with the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, and you can use our guide to help advocate for Black issues and priorities during the current legislative session.
Most of these events are virtual, but some are in-person experiences. Make sure to wear a mask, social distance, and do everything you can to keep yourself and others safe! Otherwise take some time to learn, listen, and celebrate the history of Black Texans.
