Wendy Davis Wins One For Progress
In Texas we do things big, and yesterday the nation saw State Senator Wendy Davis stand up for progress in a big way. Her 11-hour filibuster led the way in running out the clock to end the special legislative session and with it Senate Bill 5, which could have restricted women's reproductive rights and reduced the number of abortion clinics from 42 to 5. That's right, FIVE.
SB5 is dead for now, but our work isn't done. Today the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, paving the way for marriage equality in America. But in Texas that ruling is bittersweet, as a state ban on gay marriage remains in effect even with today's decision.
Here at Progress Texas, these are the kind of issues we fight for - issues shared by a growing majority of Texans, but not always represented by a majority of our public officials. Working with a coalition of partners, we provide media and press strategy on important issues like these.
As you can see, things are changing in Texas - though we still have a lot of work to do. But let this be a starting point, not an ending point. And with your help, we can make this state even better.
June 30th is an important fundraising deadline. Will you consider making a contribution of $10 - or support our efforts by becoming a sustaining donor?
We are the voice for a new majority - but we can't do it alone. We appreciate your support!
